Status Report: Ueli Checks in from Cho Oyu

“Everything is ready”: Ueli from Advance Base Camp on Cho Oyu

Ueli checked in over the weekend from Cho Oyu – the sixth highest mountain in the world and the next objective for him on the Tibet portion of Project: Himalaya. “The weather looks great for the 4th, 5th, and 6th, so maybe it will happen over the next few days,” he wrote. “We are waiting now. Everything is ready.”

One important note to clarify: although Ueli did climb solo on Shisha Pangma, he is now partnered with Don Bowie. Don traveled to Shisha with Ueli, but because his acclimatization was not ready for an 8,000 meter push, and the weather forecast mandated immediate action, he and Ueli decided collectively that Ueli should make a go for it alone. Now, with another three weeks of altitude under his belt, I have no doubts Don will be in the thick of it with Ueli on Cho Oyu. He’s summited K2 and Gasherbrum I, among others, and struck me as motivated and extremely capable (dare I say, a M.O.G.?).

The weather in the high Himalaya has been somewhat unsettled over the last two weeks, which allowed Ueli and Don plenty of time to relocate to Cho Oyu basecamp, recon the route to 7,000 meters, and rest. The fact that this current climb is unfolding at a more leisurely pace than Shisha Pangma is, in fact, a major advantage – Ueli understands how important it is for the success of the overall project that he doesn’t burn himself out too early. “I’m looking forward to Cho Oyu,” he said. “We’ll just take it easy. Try to sleep high – to be best prepared for after…. Hehehe.”
