Behind the Scenes: Namche

Ueli Steck’s Project: Himalaya
Part 4: Namche
Chronicled by Freddie Wilkinson

Greetings from Namche! We’ve been here in the heart of the Khumbu for a few days, acclimatizing and enjoying the refreshingly slow pace of life… As usual, our stay here has been that much more relaxing thanks to the wonderful Sherpa hospitality – a special shout-out goes to Pemba at the Khumbu Lodge.

Today, Namche stands at a crossroads between a traditional Himalayan village and a modern mountain resort town. It’s amazing to see how quickly the place is growing up – one apt example of this transition is the fact that when I booted my computer up here, it registered no fewer than five different wifi-zones… Times are changing, but with grounded local leaders like Pemba, I have no doubt that the Sherpa people will manage the change without losing grip of their heritage.

Ueli joined us this afternoon and tomorrow we will continue up to Pangboche. Needless to say, we are super psyched for the next leg of the adventure! I could go on about our recent exploits, but it’s probably best to let the following video blog tell the story. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and with modern dslr film-making techniques, a short, three minute dispatch maybe worth a million! Huge props to Jim Aikman, our team tech-czar and the man behind the magic.
